  June 5, 2022 The Last Week of 1st Grade! School Picnic: Our class will enjoy the Brown School picnic on Wednesday from 12:20-1:10. We are looking forward to having a great time together!    Summer Reading Challenge: Check Mrs. Bawks' blog for our Summer Reading Challenge! Last Week of School: This week students will be coming home with some of the learning materials that we have had in our classroom throughout the year. Please remind your little one to clean out their backpacks each day :) Thank You! I cannot let the year end without thanking you all for sharing your most precious gift with me this past year.    May 31,2022 This Week in First Grade! Reading/Word Study:  This week in reading we will be working on cause and effect. We will use illustrations and text to help us understand cause and effect.  This week in word study we will review all the word patterns from this year!    Writing: This week in writing we will be working on letter writing. We will begin writing letters to the incoming first graders to let them know what to expect when they start first grade next year. In addition, we will do some fun end of the school year writing prompts! Math: This week in math we will be working on telling time the hour and half hour. Once we finish the unit on time, we will do our end of the year review! Science : Unit 3  Plant & Animal Superpowers  In this unit, students explore how parts of plants and animals are essential for survival.    May 22,2022 This Week in First Grade! Reading/Word Study:  This week in reading we will be working on cause and effect. We will use illustrations and text to help us understand cause and effect.  This week in word study we will be working on silent letters.  Ex. knee, gnaw, know, climb, write   Writing: This week in writing we will be working on letter writing. We will begin writing letters to the incoming first graders to let them know what to expect when they start first grade next year. Math: This week in math we will be working on fractions (1/2 and 1/4). We will also start talking about telling time the hour and half hour.   May 15,2022 This Week in First Grade! Thank you SO much for making me feel so appreciated during staff appreciation week! I am so grateful to get to spend my days with your little ones! Reading/Word Study:  This week in reading we will continue our focus on comparing and contrasting using text and illustrations. This week we will compare books that are similar and talk about differences as well.  In word study this week we will be focusing on soft c/g as well as silent letters.    Writing: This week in writing we will be finishing up our animal research projects. Students have researched, organized facts, wrote a book, drew illustrations and typed their research on to a Google Slides document! They have been very busy! May 1,2022 This Week in First Grade! Reading/Word Study:  This week in reading we will be starting our new unit on comparing and contrasting. Students will compare and contrast using illustrations and text.  In word study this week we will focus on the /oi/ and /oy/ word pattern.  Examples: Boy, boil, foil, toy   Writing: This week in writing we will continue our work on creating an informational writing piece that has a beginning, middle (3-5 details) and end. We have been working hard on creating our four sections. Now we are getting to the point of putting those four sections together into a book format. Math: This week we will continue looking at measurement up to 120 units. We will also be looking into subtraction story problems involving measurement.
